Interstices No. 5
I am inspired by the history that falling-down buildings and structures represent. I think about all they have seen through decades of observation and am awed by their steadfastness. I want to share this fascination with the viewer and hope that some of the things I feel when I ponder these places becomes apparent.
In my Interstices Collection specifically, I’ve recalled from my youth a cinderblock house originally painted white but now consisting of lots of peeling paint and broken cement. I loved that house. I loved who resided there. Seeing my collection brings me back to that innocent time.
To make these paintings, I used materials like palette knives, extra sharp pencils and occasionally collage to create textures, some imagined and some genuine, that I have found within these structures and memories. I want to share my feelings about them and hope that, these pieces being so heavily textured, the viewer will have an almost tactile experience as they reflect on their own histories.
